About the project

This two-year project seeks to promote a safer environment for children in South East Europe as described by UNICF[1]. Project activities specifically address the following elements of building a protective environment based on the UNICEF framework: attitudes, customs, behaviors and practices; open discussions of child protection (in the media and in civil society initiatives); and improving the knowledge and strengthening the capacity of parents and service providers such as health workers and teachers to ensure a safe environment for children. Activities also contribute to improving the government commitment to protection and improvement of youth life skills, knowledge and participation.

The project builds on existing Parent School Partnership (PSP) structures, local NGOs capacity and the best PSP experiences related to school/community mobilization for civic response to trafficking in human beings. Utilization of Parental networks as a mechanism for combating trafficking has been recognized as an innovative and sustainable prevention approach. Parents, teachers, and students together have the capacity to change attitudes, values and behaviors and initiate the creation of safer environments for youth.

[1] UNICEF identifies eight key components of a protective environment: government commitment and capacity; legislation and enforcement; attitudes, customs and practices; open discussion; children’s life skills, knowledge and participation; capacity of families and communities; essential services, including prevention, recovery and reintegration; and monitoring, reporting and oversight activities. http://www.unicef.org/protection/files/Trafficking.pdf
